Belgium Browning Standard Weight Auto 5 Classic Shotgun 1957

Here is an American classic, designed by John Browning this is an iconic shotgun. This particular model is the M (Standard Weight) 12 GA model, built during the last months of 1957. This was one of the first shotguns I owned and as you can see its a working shotgun not a collectible. The receiver has been taped for scope mounts by the previous owner (a friend) and was used to feed his family during lean times. This beautiful shotgun was produced from 1902 to 1999 in 12 GA / 16 GA / 20 GA. A bit of history on the Browning Auto-5 it was designed in 1898 and was one of the first successful mass-produced semi-automatic shotguns. The story goes that John Browning shopped this design to both Winchester and Remington but he was impatient with the progress so he decided to produce it himself. My particular Auto-5 also known as Humpback was produced by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) in Belgium. The Auto-5′s were produced in Belgium, USA, and Japan. The Auto-5 is also a long recoil operated semi-automatic which differs from most modern gas operated mechanisms in that the bolt and barrel remain together during recoil. Still the design is solid and with proper maintenance many of these fine shotguns are still in use today.
